"Britain and the World: Travel Writing in the Eighteenth-Century"
In the long eighteenth century, travel became a national occupation for the British. They undertook voyages of exploration and discovery that laid the foundation for global trade, diplomatic missions to the courts of foreign sovereigns, tours of the continent for education and pleasure; and, increasingly, domestic tourism began to emerge. This guest lecture will focus on two texts that represent two different modes of encounters between British selves and foreign others: Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters (c. 1716-18), which provide fascinating, proto- anthropological insights into Ottoman culture while critically looking back at British societal and gender norms; and Tobias Smollett’s The Expedition of Humphrey Clinker (1771), in which a family tour of the British Isles becomes the occasion for anxiously reflecting on a growing consumer culture fed by the import of foreign luxury goods.
