Teaching in ELF: The case of CLIL

Guest lecture with Aline Bieri (University of Basel)

This guest lecture is part of Prof. Locher’s MA seminar on “English as a Lingua Franca” (35006-01), and explores the connections as well as the differences between Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). CLIL is a dual-focused educational approach whereby content subjects such as history or biology are taught in a second or foreign language with the aim of improving both the content knowledge as well as the language proficiency of that second or foreign language. Even though CLIL per se does not necessarily constitute an ELF situation, I argue that there are fruitful interfaces between the two, such as for instance the use of multilingual repertoires or the notion of linguistic creativity. Drawing on CLIL data from my PhD project (“CLIL in the Swiss context: The linguistic challenges and implications of teaching a subject such as biology in English and German”), I am going to illustrate and discuss the value of such interfaces in the light of current CLIL and ELF research.
