Simultaneous Interpreting Strategies and Interpreters' Blunders

Research Colloquium with Dr. Daria Dayter (University of Basel)

“Strategies” is a term that often pops up in the literature on translation. This word can refer to didactic advice (this is how you should translate), or to conscious planning by the translator (this is how I will solve the equivalence task), or to the product of translation (this is the evidence of strategic transformation). In this talk, Daria Dayter focuses on one particular type of strategy - a transformation indicative of interpreting procedures that are visible in the product of interpreting.

Dayter uses a parallel bidirectional corpus of Russian-English simultaneous interpreting to investigate the presence of eight main strategies in the sample. The type of strategy is then correlated with three variables: direction of interpreting, position of the source fragment in the original text, and phraseological complexity of the source fragment. The findings indicate that all the strategies including an additional category, incorrect interpretations (interpreters’ blunders), are present in the sample, although some of them are considerably less common than earlier literature purports. All three variables have significant association with the type of strategy.

Finally, Daria Dayter talks in detail about the blunders category to find out what incorrect solutions interpreters use, in which contexts these happen, and what their source could be.
