Taking Prof. Ana Llinares' (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) visit and her guest lecture in Basel as a starting point, this workshop seeks to bring together researchers working on second or foreign language acquisition and learning, as well as its application in teaching.

The format of the workshop is based on 20-min inputs by the following invited researchers:

• Dr. Catherien Diederich (Institut Fachdidaktik Sprachen)
• Jinying Li (Universität Freiburg)
• Stefanie Meier (Universität Basel)
• Aline Bieri (Universität Basel)

The presentations are followed by more extensive discussions with regard to three focal points: approaches and methods, the role of context, and application of research.
