English as a Lingua Franca in ASEAN and the Role of Local Varieties

Prof. Andy Kirkpatrick (Griffith University)

In this talk Prof. Andy Kirkpatrick will first outline how the role of English as a lingua franca has developed across the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and then illustrate, with examples from the Asian Corpus of English (ACE), how multilinguals from ASEAN for whom English is an additional language are using and shaping English, and the communicative strategies they adopt to negotiate meaning. He shall then contrast this with examples from local varieties of English and argue that the role of ELF has more to with international communication and that the role of varieties of English has more to do with intra-national communication, identity and places.
