What can usage data tell us about language change?
What can usage data tell us about language change?
This talk will address how usage data from large corpora can be used to address theoretical questions in language change. On the basis of historical corpus data from English, I will apply distributional semantic methods in order to discuss how constructions change in in meaning over time, and how observations from corpus data can inform theoretical claims regarding general processes of language change, specifically in grammaticalization theory and diachronic construction grammar.
