"Translation: Hospitality or cultural appropriation?”

Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Professor at Columbia University in New York. This talk is part of the Ringvorlesung Languages and Literatures in Africa. Plural forms of living-together.

In his lecture, he will reflect on translation as a practice that creates reciprocity and hospitality between cultures and languages. He will also address the objection that, in a (post)colonial world and given the hierarchy that exists between languages, translation is rather domination (Pascale Casanova) and violence. Such a discussion also raise the question of a literature written in the "imperial" language. He will refer to his book De langue à langue. L’hospitalité de la traduction, Albin Michel, 2022; in English: From language to language, the hospitality of translation, Other Press 2025. The talk will be given in English. Questions may be asked in English or French.
