James Baldwin and Switzerland: A Stranger in the Village

Gastvortrag von Prof. Dr. Douglas Field (University of Manchester)

Between 1951 and 1965, the American writer James Baldwin visited Switzerland seven times. While there has been substantial scholarship on the writer’s relationship to France and Turkey, less is known about the impact of Switzerland on his life and work. The talk will give a brief overview of Baldwin’s life and work and will consider his position as a transnational writer. The talk will then focus on his sojourns in Switzerland, including a discussion of his famous essay, “Stranger in the Village”.
