"Fragments of Postcolonial Urbanisation: A Pluriversal Survey of Southern Urban Studies"
The critical decentring of urban studies from the experiences of cities in Europe and North America at the extant southern and postcolonial turn has provided a fertile and generative terrain for rethinking the urban and cityness in the 21st century. The south is no longer treated merely as a geographical marker of territory located south of the Brandt Line, in the former colonial world, but rather as a relational geography – a geography within which, as Anant Maranganti and colleagues argue, southern residents are “those, everywhere, whose livelihoods have been made precarious by geohistorical processes of colonialism and globalizing capitalism”. However, rather than a unison, postcolonial urban theory is composed of a patchwork of pluriversal concepts and ideas situated within a world of many worlds. This lecture will survey fragments of some of these postcolonial urban worlds bringing them into comparative dialogue.
