English and Spanish in the US: Languagescapes, ethnoscapes, mediascapes
In my talk I will study the ways in which two world languages, English and Spanish, co-exist and compete in the contemporary United States. After reviewing the facts and figures, I will zoom in on the ‘local lives’ of these two languages in specific places, discourse domains, and textual genres. Spanish and English influence each other through language contact, and they fuse and blend in a wide range of bilingual practices (loosely often referred to as Spanglish). Language use is in a complex and partly contradictory relationship with prevailing language ideologies. My main methodological point is that the study of languages in competition has the potential to release useful synergies between linguistics, literary and cultural studies, so that listeners from all three fields are most welcome.
