A Retrospective Approach to Pedagogy of English as a Lingua Franca
In this presentation, the focus will be on a retrospective examination of pedagogy of English as a lingua franca (ELF), focusing on historical shifts in teaching approaches, the integration of multicultural competence, and the evolution of teacher training. By tracing the progression of ELF-aware teaching methodologies alongside global social changes and advancements in technology, the study highlights key factors that have shaped ELF-aware education to meet the diverse linguistic needs of learners. Emphasis is placed on the increasing importance of multicultural competence, reflecting a shift towards pedagogies that promote intercultural understanding and inclusivity in multilingual settings. Additionally, the analysis explores how teacher training has adapted to prepare educators for the unique challenges of ELF, fostering skills necessary for effective communication and cultural sensitivity.
