SUMMARY:Comparing Jhumpa Lahiri's Novel 'The Namesak'e with Mira Nair's Fil
 m Adaptation
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores how Mira Nair's 2007 film adaptation of J
humpa Lahiri's 2003 novel The Namesake both pays tribute to and departs fr
om its source text. Drawing upon the hybrid field of adaptation studies\,
this lecture will introduce some key theoretical concepts and frameworks\,
and then proceed to a comparison of selected scenes from the film and th
e novel. It will examine how Nair's film uses the audiovisual medium to ma
ke the novel come alive and to do a different kind of artistic and politic
al work: how it enhances the multigenerational narratives and explores the
gender dynamics of a South Asian diasporic arranged marriage as well as a
n interracial romantic relationship.\\r\\nIf you would like to listen to t
his guest lecture\, please contact PD Dr. Christiane Schlote (christiane.s
chlote@unibas.ch) to obtain the necessary Zoom link.
